Machiya for the Future of the Historical Kyoto

The city council has made a decision to set out major policy changes, including lower height control, for the future of the city in September 2007. The new policies are intended to bring the humane scale of Machiya and mixed business and residential lifestyle to form a better environment.

However, the number of Machiya is still decreasing. It is a crucial moment for the culture of the city, and thus we, as citizens, businesses and local government, should unite together to save the Machiya.

It is expected to improve the townscape, empower the supporters and create the lively neighborhood.
